This series of works
is inspired by the work of Blinky Palermo (Leipzig 1943
– Maldives 1977) and more particularly by his small
works on aluminum. These works maintain a strict,
geometrical pattern as they are formed by three
horizontal stripes, yet despite their simplicity and
their small size (27 x 21 cm) what struck me the most
about them was a spiritual dimension they tend to take.
A common feature in Palermo’s work, addressed though
without any heaviness but rather through a playful way
and sometimes with humor.
This concern and fascination were the common ground I
found between my work and thoughts and Palermo’s, and
what prompt me to start working on this series; a
practice I often use as I regard my work –as well as
painting today- being in relation and as a continuation
of what has preexisted.
The use of encaustic occurred as a means to
counterbalance the simplicity of the geometrical forms;
through encaustic and the embroidering of the small
brushstrokes, time is invested on the painted surface,
as well as, the appropriation of it that comes along.
